Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
110-1
110-17
110-18
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 110 code is present.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Check for Light Loads
A. Consult the operator to determine the usual load factor.
Engine Load
Result: The load factor is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The load factor is less than 50% NOT OK.
Note: This overcooling is caused by the reduced amount of heat that is produced by the engine during light loads.
Repair: Operate the engine at a load that is greater than 50%.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
3. Check the Jacket Water Heater
A. Determine if the jacket water heaters are functioning properly.
Jacket Water Heater
Result: The heaters are OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The heaters are NOT OK.
Repair: Determine the cause of the malfunction of the heaters. Make the necessary repairs.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
4. Check the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
The sensor may be indicating an incorrect temperature, that is within the normal range of the sensor.
A. Check the reading of the engine coolant temperature with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). The temperature should rise steadily as the engine is warmed. Ensure that the temperature is reasonable.
B. Reference the reading to another temperature indicator when possible.
Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Testing the Cooling System"
Coolant Temperature Sensor Result: The temperature sensor is working properly.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: The temperature sensor is not working properly.
Proceed to the next step.
5. Inspect Sensor Circuit Components
A. Inspect the sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.
Circuit
problem
Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.
Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.
Result: A circuit component is not damaged or corroded.
Repair: Replace the sensor.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
6. Check the Water Temperature Regulators
The water temperature regulators should not begin to open until jacket water reaches opening temperature for the regulators.
A. Allow the engine to cool and then start the engine. Check the hose at the outlet for the jacket water. If the hose is warm and normal operating temperature is not achieved yet, a regulator may be stuck open.
B. If the water temperature regulators are malfunctioning, check the water temperature regulators according to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Testing the Cooling System".
Temperature Regulator Result: The regulators are NOT OK.
Repair: Replace the water temperature regulators, if necessary.
