Priority PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR CONVERTING 3054 EMISSIONS ENGINES INSTALLED IN 315B TRACKED EXCAVATORS TO AN OPEN BREATHER CIRCUIT
1107 PI30671 This Program must be administered as soon as possible. When reporting the repair, use "PI30671" as the Part number and "7751" as the Group Number, "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description Code. Exception: If the repair is done after failure, use "PI30671" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the September 6, 2004 Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Parts Needed list.

The 3054 Emission Engine needs to be converted to an open circuit breather in certain 315B Excavators. Black smoke from the exhaust system caused by potential oil carryover from the breather into the induction system could cause high oil consumption and durability problems. To avoid oil consumption problems, the 3054 engine needs to be converted from a Closed Circuit Breather to an Open Breather Circuit.

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The 3054 Emission Engine needs to be converted to an open circuit breather in certain 315B Excavators. Black smoke from the exhaust system caused by potential oil carryover from the breather into the induction system could cause high oil consumption and durability problems. To avoid oil consumption problems, the 3054 engine needs to be converted from a Closed Circuit Breather to an Open Breather Circuit. The conversion needs to be installed on the products listed below. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated September 6, 2004 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
Remove outlet hose from Closed Circuit Breather to induction hose.
Plug main induction hose with 9U6992 Tube, 2395017 Plug and 1278287 Clamp.
Fit new hose with 5P0765 and 1278287 Clamp and route to bottom of engine fitting two 3P2404 Hose Clips to engine at this position (see Illustration 1).

Once above has been completed, inspect that the 1761710 Air - Charge Cooler (part of 1622087 Turbo Group) is free of oil, and clean if necessary.
