Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Turn the DC breaker, located in the power distribution box to ON.
B. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool to the service tool connector.
C. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check for Air Leaks
A. Turn the DC breaker, located in the power distribution box to OFF.
B. Inspect the air supply lines to the dosing cabinet and inside the dosing cabinet for leaks.
Leaks
Result: An air leak was found.
Repair: Repair the air leak.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: An air leak was not found.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Air Supply to the Dosing Cabinet
A. Turn the DC breaker, located in the power distribution box to OFF.
B. Disconnect the air supply line to the dosing cabinet.
C. Install a pressure gauge on the air supply line to the dosing cabinet.
D. Monitor the air supply pressure from the air compressor.
E. Reconnect the air supply line to the dosing cabinet.
483 kPa to 1068 kPa (70 psi to 155 psi)
Result: The air supply pressure from the air compressor is 483 kPa to 1068 kPa (70 psi to 155 psi).
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The air supply pressure from the air compressor is less than 483 kPa (70 psi). There is a problem with the air supply to the dosing cabinet.
Repair: For information on the air compressor, refer to the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) service information.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check the Aftertreatment #1 Supply Air Pressure Sensor
A. Turn the DC breaker, located in the power distribution box to ON.
B. Connect Cat ET.
C. Use Cat ET to monitor the following pressures:
- "Aftertreatment #1 Supply Air Pressure"
- "Aftertreatment #1 DEF Dosing Pressure"
Sensor
Result: The pressure sensors are within 20 kPa (3 psi) of each other.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The pressure sensors are not within 20 kPa (3 psi) of each other.
Repair: Replace the "Aftertreatment #1 Supply Air Pressure" sensor.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the Air Assist Valve
A. Turn the DC breaker, located in the power distribution box, to ON.
B. Connect Cat ET.
C. Use Cat ET to perform the following override:
- Set the "Aftertreatment #1 SCR Dosing Air Assist Valve Command Override" to ON .
D. Use Cat ET to monitor the following pressure:
- "Aftertreatment #1 Supply Air Pressure"
414 kPa to 469 kPa (60 psi to 68 psi)
Result: The acceptable range of the air pressure is 414 kPa to 469 kPa (60 psi to 68 psi).
The system is working properly. Return to service.
Result: The air pressure is less than 414 kPa (60 psi).
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check the Dosing Cabinet Air Inlet Strainer for Debris
Debris
Result: The air inlet strainer was clogged with debris.
Repair: Clean the air inlet strainer.
Result: The air inlet strainer was not clogged with debris.
Repair: Ensure that the air pressure regulator is adjusted within the specifications. Refer to Testing and Adjusting , Air Pressure Regulator - Test and Adjust for the appropriate procedure.
If the problem persists after verifying the air pressure regulator setting, proceed to Test Step 7.
7. Check the DEF Injector Tip for the DEF Nozzle
A. Remove the DEF Lance from the Clean Emissions Module (CEM).
B. Inspect the DEF injector nozzle for proper installation and torque. Refer to Specifications , Nozzle (DEF) for proper torque of the DEF injector nozzle.
DEF Injector Tip
Result: The DEF injector tip was properly installed and torqued to specifications.
Repair: Adjust the air pressure regulator on the air manifold to the proper pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting , Air Pressure Regulator - Test and Adjust. If the regulator will not adjust, replace the component.
Result: The DEF injector tip was missing and/or not installed properly.
Repair: Replace the DEF injector tip and torque to specifications.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
